Minnesota Shubert Performing Arts and Education Center : Argentine Tango

Description
Gretchen Larson of the Minnesota Tango Society will teach students about this dance and culture through music appreciation, movement and history. The Argentine Tango is a social dance formed from body language and improvisation that originated in the late 1800’s. This social dance, its emphasis on creativity and the common language of the body, is an ideal medium to present a model of diversity that is not divisive, but rather inclusive of all.

1. Begins with an introduction of the geography of the dance.
2. Students go through examples of the rondo floor movement.
3. Students learn basic beginning steps for the tango.
4. Students listen and learn to various forms of tango music and are asked to name specific instruments they hear.
5. Artist talks about the political nature of the music and the political history of Argentina.
6. Artists demonstrate a dance for the students at the end.
