Manhattan School of Music : An Introduction to the Instrument Families with Earl Carter

Description
“Earl Carter is a pedagogue of extraordinary energy and conviction. I have seen his vitality and vivacity reach even the most remote student.”
—Joanne Polk, Dean of the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Division
Taught by Manhattan School of Music faculty member Earl Carter, this introduction to the instruments and the expressive roles they play is designed to give your students a basic understanding
of melody and a new appreciation of
how music is made.
Through hands-on research in the classroom before the videoconference, students learn about the instrument families and their distinctive sounds. During the lesson, what they have learned is dynamically illustrated through live demonstrations and prerecorded video musical examples performed by Manhattan School of Music students. With guided instruction, students then apply their new knowledge by constructing their own musical instruments at home or in the classroom, which they present to Mr. Carter during the videoconference lesson. A spirited interaction follows in which Carter takes students’ melodic and motivic ideas and transforms them into improvisatory compositions.

Preparation
=Teachers are provided with a curriculum guide that is sent to them via e-mail at least one week before the scheduled connection. Each guide has pre- and post-videoconference materials that can be used to help prepare students for the program that will be presented.
