Manhattan School of Music : 20th Century American Music:Tonality, Tradition, and Innovation

Description
The 20th century was a time of experimentation and development in all of the arts. In American music, the tradition exemplified by Aaron Copland and George Gershwin was challenged by the exploratory techniques of such composers as Henry Cowell and John Cage. Students will witness the opening up of traditional tonality and form to musical experimentation; uncover the influences of each major style; and experience firsthand the performance of extended instrumental techniques. They will also have a chance to explore new auditory possibilities and create pieces of their own.

Preparation
YES - Teachers are provided with a curriculum guide that is sent to them via e-mail at least one week before the scheduled connection. Each guide has pre- and post-videoconference materials that can be used to help prepare students for the program that will be presented.
